📸 Photo series #18: Exploring street photography in the lowrider world
Street photographer: Eric Davidove
Hi everyone,
In this edition, join us on a journey with the lowriders with Eric Davidove. They are a unique and iconic subculture in the world of automotive customization. Characterized by their lowered suspension, elaborate paint jobs, and intricate hydraulic systems, lowriders are a testament to the fusion of art and automobile. The perfect subjects for a street photography session!
Before jumping into today’s photo series, we would like to ask for your help. We've dedicated considerable effort and time to develop StoryDrops, and we're eager to move forward with your input. To facilitate this, we're arranging a casual conversation on street photography for us to better understand how we can shape the future of this newsletter to better match what you like to read. Lowriders by Eric Davidove
⏱️ Reading time: 4 min
This series is full of vibrancy and action, and offers an off-the-cuff insight into Lowriders, one of San Francisco’s subcultures. You might notice that I am not using my photography to showcase or highlight the beautiful and unique Lowrider cars. Not because the cars aren’t beautiful and unique, they definitely are. I simply want to avoid taking the sort of photos that most photographers would take. My preference is to incorporate cars into my photos for context, and bring most of the attention to the Lowrider community, traditions, and culture. In addition, I try to pepper in a bit of humor along the way.

Describe yourself as a photographer and where you are based
I love walking around the streets in search of amusing moments, situations, patterns, and contradictions. I am triggered by lighting conditions, the presence of eye-grabbing shapes and forms, vibrant colors, and interesting looking people.
Photos with an underlying narrative are what I try to capture. Not necessarily a clear and well understood narrative. Rather, a narrative that results in multiple interpretations, leaves many questions unanswered, and one that is rarely witnessed or noticed.
I am based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Your favorite camera and lens
My current camera is the Leica M11 with a 35mm prime lens.
Your 3 favorite places to shoot
Urban settings, street fairs and events, and beach towns.
According to you, what makes a good picture
A good picture is well balanced, with creative exposure, light and shadow, interesting composition, and good color theory or tonal quality, that focuses on a person, animal or object which is worthy of attention, with an interesting moment, action or emotion, and a bit of magic that makes it even more special.
Your favorite photographers and where you get inspired.
Too many favorite photographers, and an ever changing list. Most of my inspiration comes from my contemporaries.
