Happy Sunday everyone! 👋
When some of you experience the onset of the monsoon, others are greeted by the arrival of summer. During this season, the days become longer and the sun shines brightly, providing ideal lighting conditions for capturing photographs. So get ready, for this week’s dose of inspiration: a photo series celebrating this wonderful season.

Tel Aviv by David Berger
⏱️ Reading time: 4 min
This series of images was captured in Tel Aviv, Israel, over the course of two months in the summer of 2022. I found myself here because I was doing some work at Tel Aviv University. However, with most of my free time, I would roam the streets, making countless photographs. Like a fly on the wall, I wanted to capture the essence of the city and what it meant to be a Tel-Avivian. Here is what I observed:
Tel Aviv is a city of endless contradictions, a progressive and young city surrounded by ancient civilization and conservative culture. It is truly a melting pot in every sense of the expression. Tel Aviv, like any city in the world, would be nothing without its people. Therefore, it only made sense to aim the camera at this diversity of humans from all walks of life. In that sense, these photographs were made in collaboration with the people of this city. The zine that I made from the photographs is an homage to them.

Describe yourself as a photographer and where you are based
I am a 21 year old photographer, currently based in Philadelphia, PA, USA. However, come August, I will be moving north to Boston. As for my photography, I don’t like to limit myself to a specific genre or style. Instead, I try to heed the advice of many great artists who discuss the value of a “democratic eye,” treating photography like the act of pointing at anything I find interesting.
Your favorite camera and lens
I enjoy using cameras that are small, quiet, and, most importantly, are reliable. For that reason, I am currently using and enjoying my Fujifilm X100V. Very often, I will use the conversion lens that gives it a 28mm equivalent focal length.
The last place you shot
I am currently documenting my city of Philadelphia every day. I've been paying special attention to a train station called 30th street station, documenting the flow of people inside and outside of the station.
Your favorite moment of the day to shoot
I love to photograph early in the morning because not only is the morning light beautiful, but there is also something special in observing the world as it wakes up. I come outside when the streets are basically empty and watch them as they fill up with people. There's something to be said about bearing witness to the rhythm of life, rather than just being caught up in it.
Your favorite photographers and where you get inspired
I love the work of the early street photographers such as Henri Cartier Bresson, Gary Winogrand, and Daido Moriyama. Oddly enough, my main source of inspiration comes from other areas of art. Film directors such as Andrei Tarkovsky and Hayao Miyazaki have inspired me immensely in their ability to masterfully connect complex human emotion to imagery with very minimal dialogue. Music producer Rick Rubin has also had a major impact on my approach to photography with his commentary on creativity and art.
