Pride Parade by Ilan Ben Yehuda
⏱️ Reading time: 4 min
In this series from the Pride Parade, I was looking for surrealistic situations and extreme human characters. All this to create an interesting and thought-provoking visual story about the gay community.
Almost all of the photos in this series were taken candidly and this is the first time I am publishing a photo series using flash.
Written and shot by Ilan Ben Yehuda.

Describe yourself as a photographer and where you are based
I am Ilan Ben Yehuda from the city of Ramat Gan in Israel. I am a street photographer who captures situations of a decisive moment. For a living, I do graphic design for the fashion industry. I studied film photography (black and white) about 25 years ago at Camera Obscura in Tel Aviv. About 12 years ago I started photographing intensively on the street. First documentary photography and later street photography, mainly in south Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. My photography is characterized by surrealism, humor and a unique and ironic view of urban life. In recent years I had the honor of winning several times in Israeli documentary photography competitions, and my works have been represented in a museum.
Your favorite camera and lens
Now I am using fuji xt4. Usually I am using 16mm 18mm lenses which equivalent in full frame camera to 24mm and 28mm.
Your favorite moment of the day to shoot
In Israel, it is almost impossible to photograph during the day because of the strong light. I like to take pictures before evening hours.
Your favorite photographers and where you get inspired.
The photographer who inspired me the most was the Israeli street photographer Alex Levek. I was amazed from his work and from the possibilities to create an interesting visual story through the lens. I also liked his humor and surrealistic view of life in Israel. For this series, I think I got inspired by the great British photographer Martin Parr. He used a strong flash to illuminate people and situations and create powerful and surrealistic images.
